about

"Nightscape: Expansion was originally released during the holiday season of 1999. Critics raved about the vastly improved graphics and new "Craft-Tech" system that allowed upgrades to the airship 'Cosmic Drifter" and mechs used in combat. The shift in focus to story in particular was cited by many as a welcome change, giving more emotional weight to the narrative centered on the plucky mechanic Yuriko, her enigmatic father Captain Finn, and the lovable ruffian Vance the bounty hunter."

After over twenty years and by popular demand, I'm finally giving the soundtrack a proper release. "Night-heads" are the best fans on the planet and I hope this album means as much to you as you all do to me.
Thanks for all the wonderful messages over the years....I'll always look back fondly on this score, my first project for Starwind Studios.
I hope you enjoy! :)

From the Nightscape: Expansion wiki:

Yuriko is an orphan who has lived her whole life on the tiny planet Yugen in a middle-of-nowhere galaxy called the "Scrap Belt." Every day, scrap metal big and small enters their orbit to either be redirected away or collected by magnetic ships and refurbished by "Craft-Techs" into buildings, tools, and anything else the Yugenites need to survive. This metal garbage is their sole resource on the desert planet, outside of a meager amount of oil that has nearly run dry. A death sentence for a planet that becomes freezing cold at night.

No one knows for certain where the scrap comes from. Some say a war that has raged for thousands of years thousands of light-years away. Yuriko was only ten when her father Finn left to discover the source of the material, and hopefully a fuel resource. Like every other brave adventurer to attempt the journey, he was never seen again. Her mother died shortly after and Yuriko took up Craft-Teching, which she was something of a prodigy at. Everyone sought her services at the repair shop she ran out of her shantytown shack.

One day, an airship came screaming past the magnet ships to a crash in the town square. Everyone rushed to aid the pilot, but it was clear his injuries were fatal. If that wasn't already tragic, they quickly realized that this wasn't one of the townspeople that had left Yugen with news of discovery...he was wearing strange clothing and no one recognized him.

As he labored to pull some parchment out of his pocket with coordinates scrawled on them, his gaze fixed on Yuriko and his eyes widened with recognition. "He sent me... y-y....you... really do have his eyes..." he whispered but trailed off and succumbed to his injuries.

Yuriko, being the best Craft-Tech in town, was tasked with repairing the airship. She quickly found that it wasn't solar-powered like Yugen airships but with a strange blue crystal that seemed to resonate with the human voice. Was this the fuel source they had been hoping to find? Was there more where this ship came from?

As she worked tirelessly over several days she heard the elders deliberating over what to do next. The last airship left Yugen five years ago, and this might be their last chance to discover a fuel that could save the planet. She abruptly entered their meeting room and shouted that she should be the pilot, which was only met with incredulous stares.

"Look, everyone else you could send has a family that will probably never see them again. I have nothing. I have to do this for myself and the future of Yugen. And...you heard what that man said...I know it's a stretch, but..."

Her eyes began to well with tears. Somehow the anger she often felt for her father was replaced with hope.

She quickly wiped them away and ferociously shouted
"I fixed it, now I'm piloting it!"

Before they could protest, Yuriko ran to the runway and hopped into the cockpit. Her necklace was an airship key, a parting gift of her father's. She ripped it off her neck and twisted it in the ignition, blasting out of orbit. A digital HUD appeared in the air surrounding her, showing the Scrap Belt's star formations and planets.

"Okay, let's input those coordinates!"
